The Family

Dan and Audrey have been farming since 1980. It started in 1966 when Dan’s parents, Dietrich and Martha Neufeld, took a risk and purchased 20 acres at 32267 King Rd in Abbotsford. They turned a dairy farm and rented acreage into a 45 acre raspberry farm, and Neufeld Farms was born. They later added u-pick cucumbers and sweet corn. Dan, their youngest of 6 children, was actively involved in the farming activities throughout his high school years. When asked if he wanted to take over the farming operation it was an opportunity that he was happy to accept.

We started off by selling our produce from under a tree on a picnic table in the back yard. The sign nailed on the tree said “HONK FOR SERVICE.” In 1980 we purchased 10 of mom and dad’s acres and we continued to work the farm while Dan continued to work off the farm as well. With the raspberry market being saturated, we purchased chicken quota and currently grow 60000 chickens every 8 weeks. Over the years we diversified the field crops to include sweet corn, pickling cukes, pumpkins, blackberries, and strawberries.

We saw a need to get chicken from our family farm, to your family table, we turned one bay of our garage into a chicken shop. In 2001 we built our new building, and have continued to move forward with additions and renovations.

And so Neufeld Farms, the Market Store and Berry Barn has been a progression that we’ve taken one step at a time. Dan’s Dad, Dietrich passed in 1991, but he left his love of the land and farming with us. Martha stayed on the farm for awhile and them moved into a condo . She continued to support her whole family and lived a full life loving all those around her until 2016.

“Farming is a way of life. It’s a lot of hard work, but comes with many rewards as well. Thank you to our children for all of their help, support, hard work and willingness to be in this together with us. And to the community for supporting us… your local farmer.”

The Food

As chicken farmers, we understand the responsibility we have towards proper animal care, the environment and our customers. We grow your food and strive to bring excellence in every way possible. To provide you with wholesome choices, for you and your family. . . because we care.

It All Starts With…

Baby Chicks that arrive at our farm the same day that they have hatched. Our barns have bean cleaned, disinfected, warmed and made ready for them. The chicks are gently placed on the fresh bedding under the heaters by the feed and water. They run freely in the barns at their comfort and continue to grow while Dan watches to make certain that their living conditions are comfortable for them. As farmers we understand our responsibility to the chicks, the environment and to you the consumer. The Canadian Chicken industry has a very high standard and so our chickens are raised using extreme care in health, diet and hygiene.

And Then…

The chicks are fed a diet of grains (corn, wheat and barley) with some by-products (soy and canola meal). In smaller quantities, energy sources such as animal and vegetable fats and mineral and vitamin supplements are also added. These are all mixed for us and calibrated precisely at our local feed mill. Chickens grown in Canada are not injected nor fed any hormones, ever! Probiotics (good bacteria) and antibiotics may be added to prevent disease and digestive problems. We also raise ‘Specialty Grain Fed Birds’ which do not have antibiotics or animal by-product in the feed. Once the chickens weigh 41/5 to 5 pounds we ship them to our local processor.

And Finally…

The chicken gets processed and made into a variety of products. It is quickly individually frozen from fresh. All of our chicken is Canadian Government Inspected in a HACCAP approved plant. Once we receive the products that they have frozen for us, we repackage it in clear re-sealable bags, and place it in our display freezers. We have no secrets…you can see the product that you are purchasing. We are proud to be Canadian Chicken Growers, and we are proud to sell our own (and other local farmer’s) free run hormone free chicken in our market. Come on in and take a look for yourself!
